Our Love-Hate Relationship with Corporate Governance

Share Post:

By John Dickson | Managing Director

Corporate governance is a broad-ranging term which, amongst other things, encompasses the rules, relationships, policies, systems and processes whereby authority within organisations is exercised and maintained. It is the system of rules, practices and processes by which a company is directed and controlled.

Following the popularity of the 2015 Corporate Governance roadshow, John Dickson, managing director of DWS Hospitality Specialists is hitting the road once again to deliver the Corporate Governance Masterclass to Boards and Committees across the South East.

Committee and Board elections are now happening across the State which means new and returning members need to be aware of the numerous areas of personal and commercial risk. In addition to Common Law Corporate Governance Principles, there are also a range of other considerations such as Privacy, Food Hygiene and Gaming legislation, to name a few.

With a growing responsibility being placed on Committees and Boards, increased regulatory complexity and the risks associated with fulfilling a Board or Committee role, it is critical Clubs ensure they have trained your new and existing members to manage their personal and commercial obligations.

We all love the outcomes of good corporate governance; strong strategic direction, clear rules, practices and processes that drive our organisations to economic advantage and ongoing success in a competitive market, but let’s face it … we hate the complexity, the issues and situations that require us to make the tough decisions and the all-encompassing responsibility and risk that comes along with it.

The Queensland Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) expects Board and Committee Members of gaming venues to possess a high degree of corporate governance knowledge and understanding, which makes this a significant knowledge base requirement for all Community Clubs.

However, it isn’t as daunting as it sounds! Through regular independent assessment, training and structured policies and procedures, any organisation can ensure that its governing entity acts appropriately and in the best interest of their shareholders, staff and members.

At DWS, we have over 40 years of experience, including the development of corporate governance programs for government bodies and not for profit organisations, John Dickson and DWS offer the ideal mix of real world experience, industry relevance and university level education, to ensure that all critical aspects are covered.

This course provides the underpinning knowledge of good corporate governance for Clubs and is ideal for new and even existing Committee Members wishing to refresh their knowledge. With our Corporate Governance Program you can be assured that your board members will be confident in their decisions on the future of your venue in the years to come.

With our extensive exposure to the often complex structure of club environments we are ideally placed to assist you with strategic planning and corporate governance initiatives and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss these needs further, with the strictest of confidence, at one of our up and coming Roadshow events, or individually.

Securing your place is easy, simply contact us at info@dws.net.au, or on 07 3878 9855, or click here to register into an upcoming program.
