The big day is almost here, as the Queen’s Wharf Precinct in Brisbane are set to open their doors on August 29th. It is a new beginning for me, too, as I embrace new tech with my first ever special edition podcast! We all know about my penchant for a good chat, so let’s teach an old dog new tricks and get into the recording studio with our gaming guru, Justine Channing.

You have often heard from me about the potential impact of the new Casino on the Club industry in Queensland, and now we are all about to see which theories, reports, and crystal ball predictions were on the money…or full of hot air. However, before the Star Brisbane gleefully cuts the ribbon on their long-awaited landmark and entertainment precinct, I sat down with someone who has a fair idea about what the casino opening means for Clubs: Justine Channing, Editor of The Drop Magazine, a legend in the gaming industry, and our new Strategic Gaming Specialist at DWS.

We delve into a broad range of topics relating to Queen’s Wharf, from the pluses and minuses to the Club industry, to staffing issues, customer service considerations, and the impact the new casino may have on local communities in Brisbane.

“The Casino wants customers that come from further away; they want to be able to go and pick someone up from the Sunshine Coast and bring them to Brisbane to stay overnight. If you are a top tier player in a medium size Club, you are treated really well by that Club. If you make that same spend at the Casino, you wouldn’t even crack the third tier. You are special at your own Club, but you are not so special at the casino, unless you are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

We also discuss a hot topic on the top of everyone’s mind in the Club industry, cashless gaming trials and which states will be looking to NSW to mirror potential changes to other regulatory environments.

Justine doesn’t hold back on her advice for Clubs, and offers some practical tips for not just surviving, but thriving during these uncertain times:

“Mum is the one who makes the decision about where the wallet goes, not dad. The flashier the toilet, the more females aged 50+ you will get in your gaming room.”

Now that we’ve given you a bit of a teaser…it’s time to sit back, grab a cuppa and listen to everything you need to be prepared for when the new kids on the block open their doors!

As always, I’d love to know your thoughts! I’ll be taking a break over the next month or so, in my absence please don’t hesitate to reach out to Karen Miles.

We hope you enjoy listening!

Discussion disclaimer: Examples of Casino customer engagement are based on many years of general industry knowledge and practice. It should be noted that new regulations now cover casino gaming operations and some of these methods may no longer be used. Casinos are successfully making every effort to comply with the new regulations and The Star have recently published a Remediation Update on 12 July 2024.
